
GEPON is the most widely deployed and matured technology
with advantages like easy management, cost effectiveness
and easy sharing. It is a good solution for FTTH applications.
MSOs can use its RFoG (RF-over-Glass) feature as their next-
generation cable PON to upgrade broadband bandwidth
and expand customer base.
Today’s service providers are demanding larger bandwidth
for subscribers to offer HDTV, MoD, VoIP and online gaming
services. The options for service providers to deliver decent
bandwidth are still dependent to the mixed network
architecture, and the demands are being met by the deeper
penetration of fiber optics in the Access Networks.
Although CATV companies now provide over 100 Mbps
service with DOCIS 3.0 to compete with ILEC/CLEC, they are
now considering fiber deployment for providing services
such as triple-play services (voice, data and cable video;
please refer to the following application figure-2). Besides,
the HFC plant brings reliability/availability, powering and
potentially disruptive upgrades into question; on the
contrary, fiber has better reliability and PON has few plant
electronics, use less power and are easier to upgrade.
On the CO (Central Office) side, video signal received from
satellite to video head-end goes through amplifiers to
amplify the signal. A WDM combines the wavelength of
broadcasting video (1550 nm) and IP data (1490 nm) to
transmit through the fiber of outside plant to home users.
The WDM on the user side is to divide the wavelength to
two different wavelengths (1550 nm, 1490 nm) to different
transceivers. V-ONU demodulates 1550 nm signal for
broadcasting video programs. GEPON-ONU demodulates
1490 nm for IP data transmission.
